Vasilis Koutroulakis introduces us to the award-winning organic honey KόRYS

“I started with a few beehives, but after 2001, with my inclusion in the young farmers’ subsidy program, I multiplied them year after year. In 2008, with the help of a community improvement project program for beekeepers, I completed my state-of-the-art beekeeping laboratory – processing plant, located at Vrachos in the village of Planetero, Kalavryta. And while our honey production has always been based on our love for bees and our respect for our fellow man, in 2012 we decided to include our apiary in an Organic Beekeeping program, offering various varieties of limited-harvest organic honey.”

You are a family business. How did your involvement with organic honey come about?

Essentially, our beekeeping business started in 1996. A Beekeeping Training Center at the Syggrou estate in Athens was the stimulus to completely change my life, to leave Athens and move to Planetero, Kalavryta, and engage in beekeeping.

You’ve done a great job with your branding. What is your philosophy on this?

Our packaging and name are exclusively curated by our family and good friends. One of them had the idea to name it and a few months ago we gave our honey the name KόRYS. KόRYS in ancient Greek means the peak, the highest point of the helmet. KόRYS was also the name of Mount Chelmos (at the foot of which our apiary is located) in ancient Greek. The white color on our label I would say is a symbol of purity, if you like, the purity of the product.

How do the varieties of honey you produce differ?

A good quality honey is always distinguished by the consumer – when the beekeeper does a good job then we are only talking about a difference in quality in taste. All KόRYS honeys have the same superior quality. The only thing that changes is the flavors in our varieties – strong and spicy spring flower honey, bitter and spicy winter aubergine, sweet and soft pine, neutral and thick our fir. Special flavors for every taste.
